Rainbow Diner

849 Route 70
Brick, NJ 08724

We were at my parents' house when it began to rain, so we decided to head home a bit early.  Because of the change of plans, we weren't thinking about our food needs.  I turned to my urban spoon app and looking for nearby diners, and the Rainbow Diner was highly rated, so we made our way over.

The parking lot is on the small side for the size of the restaurant inside, but it's more tight than not enough spaces.  When we got inside, we were met with a full lobby of people waiting to go in, which isn't that surprising for a Sunday, particularly a rainy one in the middle of a holiday weekend.  Despite the size of the crowd in the lobby, we only waited about 10 minutes.

Unlike most of the other patrons, we ordered lunch.  First, my son ordered a kid's meal, a hot dog.  The menu said it came with fries, but our waitress was very accommodating in replacing them with veggies.  The meal arrived, and I was really surprised that he got two hot dogs.  The problem, however, was that rather than coming on two hot dog buns, they were across two hamburger rolls.  My four year old kinda sorta...freaked.  The waitress (and, I think, an owner?) came over to see what was happening, and I asked if he could have something different.  They were totally willing to help us out.  (End of the story, my son decided he didn't want something else, and ended up eating the hot dogs and buns "deconstructed," but I was thrilled by how wonderful the server was.)

I got an enormous and quite delicious French dip, and my husband had a very large Pastrami Reuben.

We both liked our meals a LOT, but raved over the cole slaw; it was delicious.

We were really pleased with our meals.  We had a little discussion about the cole slaw after the fact, when my husband said it was delicious, but that it comes from a can.  I said, "Well, their menu specifically said everything is from scratch!"

The Rainbow Diner is deserving of their full parking lot, as far as we're concerned!

Today, I had grand plans for dinner.  We were going to a local amusement park for the day, but since the boys nap around 1, it wouldn't be a big deal for me to stop at a grocery store on the way home to get the stuff I needed for dinner and make it.  It didn't happen, though, since we stayed at the park until 4, and it's an hour ride home.  Exhausted, we decided to with Chinese food.  I turned once again to my urbanspoon app, and came up with the highly rated Asian Garden in Highland Park.

We ordered a Chicken Lo Mein combo platter and a quart of Won ton Soup.  I was told this would be about 10 minutes, and it was ready in less than that.

My husband kept saying that each part was SO good, and it was.  I don't know if it was the best I've ever had, but it was darn good takeout Chinese food.

As a side note, we've been on the lookout for a takeout place that gives plastic containers, and Asian Garden hit the mark... they're the first in the area we've found that gives a reusable container.
